Once I was qualified I travelled through Asia, Australia and parts of America, working with wood workers gaining more ideas; which proved to be very useful when I arrived back in Ireland.
I began to built my own workshop, where I work since 2004. I gained experience on which products sell well and met many interesting customers and like mined craft workers.
As a child I absolutely loved nature and wild life. My brother and I would wander through fields discovering different elements of nature one each occasion. With this love of nature, I had to incorporate natural materials and features into my work. The style I love the most is the natural look. When people purchase a piece of my work they bring a piece of nature into their home. They don't just get a piece of furniture, but rather family heirloom; which can be passed on for generations.
I use a wide range of different timbers, mostly Irish hardwood. I find Irish timber offers more unusual grain patterns and colours. I use timber such as oak, ash, elm, beech, yew, cedar, cherry.etc. I also carve sculptures from bog oak and bog pine; which been preserved in Irish bogs for up to 7000 thousand years.
The most diverse is yew, a tree out on its own: it is the only evergreen hardwood and has not evolved since dinosaurs roamed the earth. It also poisonous; the dust from it is lethal as well as the leaves and berries. They can often be found growing the graveyards. It grows about ten times slower than ash, which itself grows slowly. This gives it very tight, dense grain. I make coasters from yew branches and furniture from larger pieces, which people love.
I have many different suppliers of wood. I also source my own trees and get them cut into slabs at home, then season them the natural way by air drying, and finish them inside using heat and dehumidifiers. This involves me in every stage of my work from the tree to the piece of furniture. This is where I find pieces which cannot be bought from any supplier. I enjoy working with my customers to achieve exactly what they are looking for.
